Microturbo celebrates 50 years of passion and innovation

Toulouse, September 20th,2011

Microturbo, a company of the Safran group and subsidiary of Turbomeca, has reached a milestone: its personnel and their families are celebrating 50 years of passionate, innovative service to their customers.

The event was held on September 17 at Microturbo's Pont de Rupé site in Toulouse, the location of its head offices, design offices, production and assembly workshops and test beds. For a whole day, over 1,000 visitors (personnel members and their families) were treated to a discovery tour of the full range of Microturbo's products, its disciplines and its know-how, with guided visits, exhibitions and activities for both children and adults.

Specialized in the design, development and manufacture of low-power gas turbines, Microturbo is a world leader in the field of propulsion systems and power systems having delivered over 10,000 units: auxiliary power units on board planes and helicopters, starting systems, turbojet engines for propulsion of missiles and target drones.

The company was founded in 1961 by James Gaston Bayard (1914-2001), following the success of the Noelle 60 air turbine starter, specially designed for the Atar turbojet engines on Dassault Aviation's Mirage III fighter aircraft.

After several buyouts, Microturbo was in 2005, incorporated into the Safran group, an international high-technology OEM and leader in aerospace, defense and security.

50 years on, passion and innovation remain at the heart of the Microturbo strategy, as driven by the substantial financial and human resources dedicated to these areas ever since its creation. To prepare for the future and offer its customers ever more innovative and competitive products, the company invests 25% of its annual sales revenue in Research and Development (5% in Research & Technology), and has around a hundred engineers and technicians working in these areas.
